Suzanne Pilley had been having an affair with married man David Gilroy. It was a turbulent affair which she had tried to end several times, but he pleaded with her. Just before she disappeared she had started seeing another man.

 

4th May 2010, Suzanne Pilley last seen alive. Her body has never been found.

 

Monday 20th February 2012, The trial of David Gilroy for the murder of Suzanne Pilley starts at Edinburgh High Court. Gilroy denies murder, he denies a further charge of trying to defeat the ends of justice.

Gilroy faces other charges, including an allegation that he assaulted his wife Andrea on various occasions between 1st January 2009 and 18th May 2010.

 

Tuesday 13th March 20112, The jury at Edinburgh High court retire to consider a verdict.

 

Thursday 15th March 2012, David Gilroy is found guilty of murder, he will be sentenced in April.

 

12th April 2012, it has been announced that the sentencing will be on TV, this is a British first.

 

Wednesday 18th April 2012, Sentencing at Edinburgh High Court, the first ever televised sentencing in British legal history.

 

Gilroy was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 18 years behind bars.

The judge, Lord Bracadale, said, Gilroy was the only person who knew where her body was, adding, "I hope that the day will come in your life when you feel able to disclose that information and that may bring some comfort to her bereft family, particularly her mother and father who, after giving evidence, sat in quiet dignity throughout the rest of the trial,"
