The Tragedy of Henry Nowak: A Chronological Timeline

Act I: The Fateful Encounter

  • Late October 2025: 18-year-old Henry Nowak, a bright and principled finance student from Essex, moves to Hampshire to begin his first term at the University of Southampton.

  • Wednesday 3rd December 2025 (Approx. 11:15 PM): Following a night out celebrating with his university football team, an unarmed Henry begins walking back to his student accommodation.

  • Wednesday 3rd December 2025 (Approx. 11:30 PM): On Belmont Road in the Portswood suburb of Southampton, Henry crosses paths with 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa. After brushing past one another on the pavement, Henry notices Digwa carrying a large weapon and asks if he is a “bad man”.

  • The Escalation: Digwa—who is later revealed in court to possess a profound, dangerous obsession with weapons—unleashes a sudden, sustained attack on the unarmed student. Using a 21-centimetre Sikh ceremonial dagger (kirpan), Digwa cuts and stabs Henry five times, delivering a fatal puncture wound to his chest. Henry attempts to flee, desperately scaling a nearby fence before collapsing onto the ground.

  • As Henry lies dying on the pavement, Digwa takes out his mobile phone, recording humiliating close-up video footage of the injured teenager trying to escape.

Act II: The Crucial Deception

  • Wednesday 3rd December 2025 (Approx. 11:45 PM): Officers from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary arrive at the scene.

  • The False Allegation: Before police can assess the situation or notice Henry's critical wounds, Digwa aggressively assumes the role of the victim. He falsely claims that an intoxicated Henry physically assaulted him, hurled racial slurs, and knocked off his turban.

  • The Fatal Misjudgment: Acting entirely on Digwa’s fabrication, police pull a gravely wounded Henry along the ground and place him in handcuffs. Released body-worn camera footage captures a harrowing exchange: Henry pleads for help nine distinct times, stating, "I’ve been stabbed" and "I can't breathe." A responding male officer dismisses his agony, replying, "I don't think you have, mate."

  • Thursday 4th December 2025 (12:37 AM): Realizing too late that Henry is covered in blood and completely unresponsive, officers finally remove the handcuffs and attempt CPR. Henry is pronounced dead at the scene in police custody. Meanwhile, Digwa’s mother, Kiran Kaur, arrives at the area to secretly remove and hide the murder weapon.

  • 5th December 2025: Facing immediate internal alarms over the response, the Hampshire Constabulary formally refers itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Act III: The Trial & Rejection of Lies

  • Sunday 22nd February 2026: Healing begins in the community as a memorial football match is organized by fellow students to honor Henry’s memory.

  • Thursday 14th May 2026: The trial opens at Southampton Crown Court. The prosecution exposes Digwa's digital footprint, revealing a history of weapon training and extensive mobile phone searches for blades. It is revealed that while Digwa wore a legally allowed  smaller religious kirpan under his shirt, he chose to carry an unnecessarily large, lethal dagger out in public that night.

  • Wednesday 20th May 2026: Digwa takes the stand, attempting to stick to his narrative of self-defense against a "drunk, racist aggressor".

  • Thursday 28th May 2026: The jury completely rejects Digwa’s fabricated defense, finding him guilty of murder and public knife possession. His mother, Kiran Kaur, is simultaneously convicted of assisting an offender.

Act IV: The Verdict and National Outcry

  • Monday 1st June 2026: Judge Mousley KC sentences Vickrum Digwa to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years behind bars. The judge fiercely rebuked Digwa for bringing shame upon his faith and falsely weaponizing racial tension.

  • Outside the courtroom, Henry's father, Mark Nowak, delivered a heartbreaking, address, labeling his son's treatment by the police as "inhumane and degrading."

  • Tuesday 2nd June 2026: The case erupts into a massive geopolitical and social media firestorm. UK figures spark arguments over "two-tier policing," alleging that accusations of racism were prioritized over medical assessment.

  • The Dangerous Escalation: As public anger boils over, far-right protests gather outside Southampton Police Station. Amidst intense online misinformation, an innocent police officer completely unrelated to the incident is misidentified, receiving death threats and forcing his family to flee their home under police relocation.

  • The Government Intervenes: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood denounces the "dangerous undercurrent" of vigilante justice, ordering the IOPC to fast-track its investigation into Hampshire Police within three months. Prime Minister Keir Starmer publically states he felt "sick" watching the harrowing bodycam footage, demanding absolute transparency into how the police handled the situation.

  • The Call for Legacy: Seeking to heal a fractured landscape, the Sikh Press Association issues a formal apology on behalf of Digwa's family, pleading that the tragedy not be used to inflame racial hostility. Simultaneously, Hampshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner writes to the Prime Minister, demanding a national review of laws regarding bladed articles under religious exemptions.

Henry’s family maintains a resolute front: they demand systemic reform to ensure no other child ever dies humiliated and handcuffed on a British street.

Vickrum Digwas' mother, Kiran Kaur, was convicted of “assisting an offender”.

She is due to be sentenced on 17th July 2026. the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised further charges against other members of Vickrum Digwa’ family with further sentencing and possible charges pending.

Vickrum Digwa is Eligible for parole on 4th September 2045.
