Jordan Monaghan

The Early Crimes (The Children)

Jordan Monaghan killed his children to gain sympathy from his partner or to prevent her from leaving him during periods of heavy gambling debt.

  • 1st January 2013: Monaghan smothered his 24-day-old daughter, Ruby, while she was asleep in her Moses basket at the family home in Blackburn. He claimed to have found her unresponsive.

  • 8th August 2013: Only eight months later, Monaghan smothered his 21-month-old son, Logan, at a local waves pool centre, they were alone in a changing cubicle, . He again claimed the death was a tragic sudden collapse.

  • 2013 – 2016: At the time, both deaths were tragically attributed to natural causes (SUDC - Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood), and Monaghan remained free for several years.

The Investigation and 3rd Murder

The investigation into the children's deaths was reopened in 2018 following "new information" and a review of medical evidence.

  • January 2018: Monaghan was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Ruby and Logan. He was released on police bail pending further complex medical analysis.

  • September 2019: While still on bail for the murder of his children, Monaghan began a relationship with Evie Adams.

  • 24th September 2019: Monaghan murdered Evie Adams, after she threatened to end the relationship, by administering a fatal overdose of prescription drugs (tramadol and diazepam) which he had illegally obtained.

  • 25th September 2019: Evie Adams was found dead. Monaghan attempted to stage the scene to look like a suicide, even forging a suicide note to divert suspicion from himself.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

The police investigation eventually linked all three deaths through forensic toxicology and mobile phone data.

January 2021: Monaghan was officially charged with the murders of Ruby, Logan, and Evie Adams, as well as two counts of attempted murder involving a third child.

October 2021: The trial began at Preston Crown Court. The prosecution detailed his gambling addiction and his "chilling" habit of killing those close to him to manipulate his surroundings.

17th December 2021: The jury found Jordan Monaghan guilty on all three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

18th December 2021: Monaghan was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 40 years.

29th July 2022, his minimum term was increased to 48 years, after the Attorney General Suella Braverman, referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient.

February 2022, His appeal against his convictions was rejected by the high court.

He will now be eligable for parole 20th July 2067
