22 year old Clare Bernal
was shot by her former boyfriend Michael Pech, he then
turned the gun on himself.
Miss Bernal split up with
Pech following a brief relationship earlier in the year,
deciding she "didn't want any more to do with him".
Pech, who was a former security guard at the exclusive
store, Harvey Nichols, where the shooting took place,
pleaded guilty to harassing her two weeks previously..
Despite having threatened to kill her as long ago as March
2005, Pech was out on bail on condition that he did
not contact her or enter Dulwich Village, the upmarket
area of south London where she lived.
But he began to stalk her, following her in the street,
pestering her with phone calls, standing around outside
her house and bombarding her with text messages.
26th March 2005 Pech followed Claire from her work
place to London Bridge Station where he pushed her in the
back and told her: "If you dare report me I will kill
you."
One of Claire's colleagues, claimed that when Miss Bernal
made clear she was not interested in taking him back, Pech
told her: "If I can't have you, nobody will."
When Pech's behaviour became intolerable, Miss Bernal went
to the police and an investigation was launched by
Southwark's Hate Crime Unit.
April 2005 Pech appeared before Tower Bridge
magistrates charged with harassment.
31st August 2005 Pech at fist denied the harassment
charge, but he changed his plea to guilty when he appeared
before magistrates.
13th September 2005
Pech walked into Harvey Nichols in London and shot Claire
in the head, in front of staff and customers, her then
shot himself.
A post mortem confirmed
that both had died from the same gun. Police were not
looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
