23rd August 2007,  Brent Martin aged 23, died in hospital after being found injured in Town End Farm estate in Sunderland,

He was chased across two housing estates in Sunderland by three people who he thought were his friends.
Mr. Martin, who had learning difficulties, suffered brutal attacks before being stripped of his trousers and left for dead.

The men, all trained boxers from Sunderland, repeatedly punched, kicked, stamped on and butted their victim during the attack.

 

Monday 3rd September 2007, William Hughes aged 21, and two youths, aged 17 and 16, who cannot be legally named, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court.
They were remanded in custody to appear before the court on 7th November 2007.

 

Monday 7th January 2008, two people have admitted beating a disabled man to death.
William Hughes, and a 16-year-old youth, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to the murder of Brent Martin. A third youth, aged 17, denies murdering Mr Martin.
A 47-year-old woman will also go on trial accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

 

22nd January 2008, the third person in this case stands trial. The jury of eight men and four women took four hours to convict the teenager, who sat emotionless as he was found guilty.

 

17th June 2008, The court of appeal has reduced the sentences in this case.

The Court of Appeal said the "starting point" for Hughes should have been 15 years, not 30, and reduced each of the tariffs.

The sentences for Hughes and Bonallie were cut by three years, and Miller's by two.
