Sunday 17th August 2008, Care worker Christopher
bowyer set fire to the bed of one of the people in his
care at the Clayton Manor care home in Congelton. His
victim was severely affected with Alzheimer's and
dementia so could not move or communicate as the flames
took hold.
Mrs Bennett was taken to a specialist burns unit in
Manchester, where she died a week later.
Thursday 30th April 2009,
Bowyer convicted of murder and arson with intent to
endanger life at Chester Crown Court.
Bowyer denied the charges
and refused to enter the witness box during the defence
case.
During the trial, Elwen
Evans QC, prosecuting, told the court that Bowyer held a
cigarette lighter to Mrs Bennett's quilt until it was
"well alight".
Friday 1st May 2009,
Bowyer was jailed for at least 27 years.
He was labelled a "danger to society" by Mrs Justice
Dobbs.
